The role of Social Democracy remains essentially unchanged, which is of course, to reinforce imperialist rule, and in the developing world to strengthen their own national bourgeoisie and collaboration with world imperialism. With the move to the right on a world scale, with the weakening of Communism, a weakening of the genuinely socialist forces, the ruling classes find less need for Social Democracy, which progressively accommodates the bourgeoisie by abandoning even its socialist pretensions, adapting traditional liberal or even neoliberal programs, increasingly abandoning pretensions to speak for the working class in favor of the “whole of society.”
